Manning, who has had a distinguished 15 year career in sports, joins RSL following four seasons as Vice President, Sales and Service with the Philadelphia Eagles of the NFL. While at the Eagles he was responsible for the team's corporate sponsorship and premium seating. During his tenure he led the corporate sales department to double-digit revenue growth and introduced new premium seating options at Lincoln Financial Field, in addition to managing the servicing of suite clients and Club Seat accounts. Not exactly a huge coup, but an executive none-the-less. Nobody has ever scrutinized the business of Real Salt Lake, it's sort of more the on-field product that is the problem. New face for a new stadium and, hopefully, a new and improved team.

10 Bright Spots of Week 21: Galindo finds form, Blanco retains form, and Denilson signs a form
1. Cuauhtemac Blanco – the elder statesman has really started strong for the Chicago Fire and had his hand in both goals of the Fire’s revenge 2-0 shutout of the Wizards; he also had an assist in the early week matchup against KC that saw them yield 3 goals (two after going a man down); I think we’ll see Chicago grab that last spot thanks mainly to this guy
2. Maykel Galindo – back near the top and MLS player of the week; Galindo scored two goals to sink the hapless Galaxy as we learned most importantly that David Beckham is – in fact – human; Galindo’s constant presence on the field makes us wonder when we might see Lester More in action?
3. FC Dallas Front Office – Denilson has had a career of ups and downs so far, but how can you not be happy with the FCD FO for this move; a World Cup winner (no matter his small involvement in it) and at one point someone thought enough of him to break the bank; is that was the Hoops are doing though? I think you’re gonna find that this works – especially in there with Toja, Ricchetti, and Ricardinho up top – say goodbye to Adrian Serioux though as it looks like he’s the odd SI out.
4. Jaime Moreno – the Bolivian got his scoring record in the only fashion he knows how this year – a PK; yes, he’s lost his step but we all saw that goal he had for Bolivia in the Copa America; he’s still MLS caliber but unfortunately he’s competing with some of the top firepower in the league on D.C.; either way he’s got the record of 109
5. Fred – his play in both wins over New York and Toronto was phenomenal; even more so, it has been great to watch him wrestle with new aspects of the game and the adaptation to American soccer which has clearly been a long process; I think Fred is here and it’s safe to say the former Melbourne Victory stud might have made the Trio a Foursome.
6. Francisco Mendoza – Panchito has gradually been playing better and better all season and his role (1 g, 1 a) in the shutout of the Galaxy only keynotes his recent resurgence in form; it was his first goal in a SuperClasico as well
7. Jose Burciaga, Jr. – you know, I love to hate this guy mainly for some vicious tackles, lack of sportsmanship, and a general sense of finding himself into every damn scoresheet as an attacking fullback; he makes mistakes quite frequently but he often makes up for them – Burciaga found himself involved in the all three of the KCW goals against Chicago early on the week, but was overrun in the return leg 2-0 loss
8. Real Salt Lake defense – a valiant (in this since the word valiant is coupled with a hint of pity) attempt to shut down the reeling Chivas USA offense; unfortunately, they failed but the quality of the back four seems to improve with every match; can we celebrate about 3 goals in the last 3 games? No, probably not – but when you’re RSL you have to be positive about something and I don’t know whether or not I can be about the trio of Argentinians just brought in
9. Carlos Mendes – Jozy Altidore scored early and Twellman grabbed one back, but it looked as if the Red Bulls could, in fact, score again; Mendes had the ball on the left side and decided to backpass to Conway in order to ‘swing the field’; the ball was well hit but nothing out of the ordinary really – Conway must have been surveying the field or something because once Mendes’ pass reached him, he was still looking up; Conway dove to try and stop it but no luck, the ball was past him and the Revs were gifted a 2-1 win; Mendes’ gets the 9th spot due to his consistent play all season that never warrants him any sort of attention, note to Red Bulls: never pass back to Waterreus OR Conway.
10. Marc Burch – you play him, D.C. seems to win; you don’t, they lose; it could just be a matter of coincidence but the truth is, Burch has provided a sense of consistency in the back that D.C. has been longing for this year; he played a major part in man-marking the Altidore/Angel partnership in their win against NY; he was also there in their shutout of Toronto away
2. Maykel Galindo – back near the top and MLS player of the week; Galindo scored two goals to sink the hapless Galaxy as we learned most importantly that David Beckham is – in fact – human; Galindo’s constant presence on the field makes us wonder when we might see Lester More in action?

YANKS ABROAD UPDATE: Freddy Adu to Benfica? With Celtic close behind. Scholes, another Freddie, and Ricardinho too.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports that $7.5 million would have to be tabled in order to pry the 18-year old Adu away from the MLS. That's slim pickins' for a club like Benfica or Celtic and Freddy Adu's absence at the Real Salt Lake/Everton friendly fueled transfer talk. According to Lewis' sources - Adu's agent could be wrapping up a deal in just a few days with Benfica the leader in the chase. Another club mentioned is Premiership youth hotbed, Tottenham Hotspur.
Clearly - more should come from this in the coming days. Adu, however, should be in the roster for RSL's friendly match-up with Boca Juniors on Tuesday, July 24th. His departure would certainly be a bittersweet one as many are still waiting for the "real" Freddy Adu to come out. Not only that, but it might push RSL to up the ante for a Jay Jay Okocha or some other winger looking to come to the MLS.
OTHER NEWS:
Manchester United were dealt a rather large blow as trusty veteran center midfielder Paul Scholes has been ruled out of the rest of the Red Devils' Far East tour and a month onward with extensive knee pain. Exploratory surgery will be done keeping him out for the beginning of the Premiership season on August 11th.
Long-time Arsenal Gunner Freddie Ljungberg has moved on. West Ham United were keen suitors and won their man. His departure, however, was pretty much solidified when Thierry Henry left the club as Ljungberg believed that any favorable future for the club left with the French striker. Ljungberg, only 30, is healthy again (and over his injury riddled last season) and is poised to help an ailing Hammer midfield (especially if Tevez leaves).
The courtship of Ricardinho is over. FC Dallas', according to Buzz Carrick's 3rd Degree, has finally signed him on loan formally, all legal/immigration documents in order, and he will be ready to compete in the Superliga schedule rapidly approaching. Roberto Mina has been placed on injury reserve to make room for the youth international. His pace apparently rivals Dominic Oduro, except the Brazilian possesses better skill and decision-making skills. Should be real interesting, especially if Denilson comes into the mix (which we should hear something about soon).

Findley and Sturgis to RSL. Klien in return. Santino Quaranta out?
Ives Galarcep, credible soccer guru and New Jersey man to boot, has thrown some more trade information our way. In light of Honduran striker Carlos Pavon's signing, which despite his age is all-in-all the right move for the Galaxy, Ives has said that yet another move is in the works. Nathan Sturgis and Robbie Findley, both talented and formidable prospects (one can say Sturgis has already found his niche) have been shipped to Real Salt Lake for well...31 year-old Chris Klein. Klein's worth about 5 goals a year and a solid veteran presence, but haven't we seen the raw and exciting potential of both Sturgis and Findley? I mean, Klein for one those guys and a draft pick maybe, but both? That's leaving Quavas Kirk as your only solid prospect...regardless, we'll see in the coming days if the rumors are substantiated. However, Ives was right about Pavon so need to question the Sturgis/Findley/Klein deal. Although, words from other camps see Nathan Sturgis heading to Rangers, possibly joined later this summer by Damarcus Beasley - could Rangers head coach Walter Smith have gotten the Chris Coleman American bug?
Who would be the winner in this deal? Galaxy or RSL?
Steve Goff is calling for a possible Quaranta trade. Santino is still rather knew to the Galaxy organization spending only one full year with the squad after his trade from D.C., but like Eddie Gaven, he was expected to really shine - but expectations got the best of him. Now he is seen as sloppy, unfit, and albeit without drive. Yallop, if you're cleaning out the attic, why not send Jaqua packing as well? Just a rumor...

UEFA Champions League Final and other important scores
Due to my lack of posting on the aforementioned topic, you can probably guess who won.
AC Milan 2, Liverpool 1
Athens, Greece
'Pippo' Inzaghi hit for a brace as Liverpool couldn't convert the chances they did have. Inzaghi's first was a deflection off his torso after a scorching shot from Andreas Pirlo. In good news for Liverpool, though, Stevie Gerrard should be finalizing a new 5 year deal TODAY! Kaka was the difference in this game, but Gerrard had his chances and moments too. He just couldn't convert.
Other news:
US Open Cup Qualifier
Colorado 2, Real Salt Lake 1
Jacob Petersen had 2 goals to kick RSL and Jason Kreis out of Open Cup contention. Conor Casey had a decent showing as he was given significant time for the first time since signing with the MLS.
Friendlies
Rangers 1, Los Angeles 0
Home Depot Center
Kris Boyd, the Rangers hitman and leading goalscorer, put the Glasgow Rangers on top and they never looked back really. The game was relatively even as far as skill and statistics go, but it never seemed as if the Galaxy could threaten enough to win. A good showing for LA overall.
This exhibition drew over 15,000 fans.
Toronto FC 0, Benfica 0
BMO Field
18,000 saw Andrea Lombardo and Toronto struggle to a 0-0 tie against Benfica, Portuguese powerhouses. It was somewhat lopsided as Benfica controlled the play and rhythm, but as no goals were put in the back of the net - a tie was in order. The fans showed up yet again and created an amazing atmosphere for Benfica to come play in. A nice consolation prize for not beating FC Porto in the Portuguese SuperLiga.

I knew Facebook would come in handy...

Alecko Eskandarian had this to say about being traded to Real Salt Lake where he'll meet up with former United mates Freddy Adu and Nick Rimando...
"Alecko Eskandarian is in shock.... just found out i got traded from TFC to Real Salt Lake.... definitely did NOT ask for this so im pretty devastated right now"
That's the business of the game. Esky had a following already in Toronto and his blog, Esky's World, is evidence of it. I would love to see Alecko score more goals than Cunningham in RSL, but let's be honest, Cunningham will hit 100 goals this year and has been a consistent goalscoring force for whatever team he has played for. Esky is injury prone but has one of the toughest hearts and work rates in the league.
What do you think? Who got the right end of this trade?
***In Premiership news, young'un and former Arsenal target Steve Sidwell will be leaving Reading on a free transfer in favor of Chelsea. Sidwell is great, don't get me wrong, but does he fit into the same category of Frank Lampard, Michael Essien, Claude Makelele, or even Jon Obi Mikel for that matter? The only answer is: we will see.

Quick Champions League Update

Lille 0, Manchester United 1
Henrik Larsson's last goal for Man U was his most important as the Swedish 35 year old powered home the winner in the 72nd minute. Lille played hard and defiantly. The one who changed it all, however, was Cristiano Ronaldo and his seemingly effortless run down the wing. Expecting a cut-back, Ronaldo instead accelerated forward bending a perfect ball right on to Larsson's head. Flat-footed Tony Sylva couldn't stop the well-placed header. Man U through and no one assumed much differently.
LIL: NONE
MAN: Larsson (72)
Bayern Munich 2, Real Madrid 1
And the last Spanish team standing is Valencia. Would Beckham have made a difference?
Probably not. This game was action-acked however with two people being sent off (Van Bommel and Mamadou Diarra) and the fastest goal in Champions League history being scored. Dutchman Roy Makaay scored 10 seconds into the match at Allianz Arena sparking a massive uproar, one that almost maxed out my TV speakers. All in all, pretty sweet game. Neither team has been consistent so you could pretty much tell it was gonna be a crapshoot from the beginning.
BAY: Makaay (1), Lucio (66)
MAD: Van Nistlerooy (83)
AC Milan 1, Celtic 0
KAH-KAH. I'm against Italian teams pretty much all the time and not to mention, teams that threaten the morality of the game. When you have a player on the team like Kaka though, you're gonna win games. Celtic fought but to no avail.

ACM: Kaka (93)
CEL: NONE
Arsenal 1, PSV Eindhoven 1
PSV seems to get through to the quarters every year. These guys are giant-killers. Alex's own-goal put Arsenal in the front and signs certainly pointed to a Gunners win. Alex, however, wanted redemption. He got it in the 83rd minute, putting PSV's only shot on goal of the game in the back of the net. Poor Arsenal. Not much is going their way this year. Oh yea and Thierry Henry will now be out for the next 2 weeks or so.

ARS: Alex o.g. (58)
PSV: Alex (83)
Other quick news:
* D.C. United is chasing a Melbourne Victory's Brazilian Fred.
* Chicago Fire is chasing hated Mexican international Cauhetomac Blanco
* Real Salt Lake's Dave Checketts is chasing the world. He is part of a group looking to take-over Coventry City in England and is also buying GolTV in a deal worth $200 million. Fox Sports Channel said hello to Checketts and GolTV by purchasing the rights to Serie A games formerly owned by GolTV. That's a rough introduction.
