10 Bright Spots of Week Five

1. Dwayne de Rosario – technically, he is supposed to play the way he did this weekend but it is always nice to see a sound player get out of his funk; his performance earned him MLS Player of the Week honors

2. Steve Ralston – ESPN Soccernet called him ‘ageless’ and I could not agree more, this guy is a factory for assists and consistent play; maybe he’ll get an international call-up to go with his great MLS play, his season tallies are 1 goal and 5 assists (can he hit 25 for the season?)

3. Clint Mathis – I said it in the game recap and I’ll say it again, it is nice to see Mathis up at the top of the scoring charts once again; hopefully it continues and the red cards stay at a minimum

4. Kansas City Wizards – their great play has escaped even the most intent MLS fans; Zavagnin has been rock hard in the middle and Hartman in between the posts, Harrington a great rookie find, Movsisyan a budding star, and Eddie Johnson a revelation; the East looks to be feared this year

5. New England Revolution rookies – Wells Thompson and Adam Cristman have been thrust into the starting lineup and have responded brilliantly, Thompson registered his first goal while Cristman has three assists already giving Ralston a run for his team assist title

6. Chris Brown, Chris Klein – these Real Salt Lake players not only saved Jason Kreis from an eye-opening debut loss but they also made it aesthetically pleasing as both were worthy of MLS Goal of the Week if not Month awards

7. D.C. United and Houston – for pulling themselves together and grabbing three points each this weekend to start the long, arduous process of getting back on track; it seems Houston is the better side right now, dispatching Colorado 3-1 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

8. Jose Burciaga, Jr. – for being mean and ruining an otherwise decent game by the Crew; further solidified the desperate measures Sigi Schmid needs to go through to find himself a consistent striker; could Schelloto be the answer?; look for many more to come from Burciaga, Jr. and hopefully an international call-up come Gold Cup time

9. Luis Figo – for stating he wants out of Inter Milan; there could be a run for this guy by several MLS teams, he’s 34 and still has a year or two left

CORRECTION: As I had known and reported a while back, Figo has already signed with Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia on July 1st, 2007. Getting what money he can before he retires. Thank you Martha for re-enlightening me. A big slip on my part.

10. Chivas USA – I am not sure how much of cancer Amado Guevara was in the locker room and I am not even sure if he had enough time to ‘make his mark’, but Chivas came out against D.C. United and tried to get the ball rolling again, this time with Paolo Nagamura in Guevara’s place

Figo's leaving because he has a zillion Euro contract with a Saudi Arabian club -- he's winding his career down there, rather than in MLS (which is sad for all of us, but there it is). If he won't break that deal to stay at Inter -- where he's performed incredibly well since XMas -- it seems unlikely he'd do so for, say, RBNY.
